A Account of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Floor
Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book accommodation after getting there, however once I got there, a major event was taking place and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could bed down in the terminal – but soon learned that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. Unsure of how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking near a gaming venue, believing I might spend those hours somewhere operating 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape for acing the admissions interview the following day, however, being a broke student, I couldn’t afford.
The world needs more people who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed confused as a female student spotted me loitering in downtown and inquired if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and immediately she said I could crash on the ground at her university residence at the local university – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She even offered a meal: a leftover sandwiches she had taken home her part-time job. This gave me warm shower facilities and a protected spot to rest to spend the night.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me the significant risk she took as a young woman inviting a guy she’d just met stay in her room. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. As a dad now, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not go to that university, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish karma has repaid her generosity many times over. We could all use more folks who show such kindness.
