Colombian Leader Declares 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' if US Launches an Attack.

The US President along with his Colombian counterpart have turned up the volume in their verbal conflict, increasing strains bilaterally after American military units targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has drug factories and production sites and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Rising Threats coupled with Allegations

Addressing journalists over the weekend, the US president threatened similar use of force against Bogotá, claiming the country is “very sick too” and governed by a sick man who likes making narcotics and distributing it to the United States."

While Colombia is the world’s largest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is personally tied to the illicit industry.

A Frayed Partnership

This nation for decades served as a key ally of Washington in the fight against drug trafficking and enjoyed bipartisan support from American politicians, however, the relationship have worsened significantly since Trump was elected.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups including the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members disbanded subsequent to a historic peace agreement.

The President's Firm Rebuttal

When asked whether military intervention like that in Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump responded: "It sounds good to me personally."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the last century, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am not illegitimate nor am I involved in narcotics," he affirmed.

"He comments without information. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a post.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the hills. If they capture the nation's leader, whom a large part of the country loves and respects, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the nation," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to President

He passed a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed to have ever engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in writing the nation's constitution in the early 90s subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He was mayor of the capital city before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I pledged to abstain from using arms again ... but for the homeland I will take up the fight," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's security detail had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump's stance, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have condemned the possibility of American military action targeting Colombia.

Political and Financial Sanctions

The US revoked his travel authorization after he encouraged US troops to refuse any illegal orders. Later, in October, authorities imposed economic restrictions against the president, his spouse and several associates.

Concurrently while America bolstered its forces in the Caribbean and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed operations on boats in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
