Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in defense or defense capacities.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to defend and uphold this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our governing document are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject improper directives, you have to reject illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that violate the statutes or our founding principles."
The Former President's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a heated reaction from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader published a joint announcement denouncing the comments.
"Violent politics has no position in America," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our country with great national pride and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the security of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme digital publications and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration added.
Lawmakers' Firm Response
The representatives who appeared in the video also issued a statement.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this nation and took an vow to defend and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the former president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the former president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a period for moral clarity."
More Governmental Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He stated: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and without qualification."
The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative declared. "You have sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to organize a video message to personnel of the national defense, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She stated: "The sanctity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can cause chaos, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
