Fury Surges as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Backlash
Individuals from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the tragic deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump took to social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police Update and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a substantial amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
“What a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the remarks. She referenced previous comments from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his party to defend the comments.
The Director's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of a different political figure.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
