Israelis commemorate second anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"The aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of people killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the plan.
A senior representative involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the morning session finished without tangible results, amid differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Key Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance provision
- Post-war administration of the region
Public Reaction
In the city's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until every captive come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
In front of the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their support for the families of the captives. Israel says forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens want the war to conclude in return for the release of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.
"Once the night comes, the anxiety comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.
"My family are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, especially my little child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had accepted the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city indicated additional fatalities had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south, health workers said.
