'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Ethan Galbraith resumes clash with Pep's side.

Ethan Galbraith breaks into a smile as he remembers the nail-biting closing stages of Swansea's stunning fightback victory against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup. The encounter ended with Galbraith picking up a fan's glasses amid the post-goal scrum.

During the final moments of stoppage time, Galbraith cracked the upright with a long-range strike from distance, and his teammate quickly slammed home the loose ball before racing off toward the crowd to mark the goal, with fans congregating around the players.

Stunning Reversal

The result capped an unbelievable comeback given the Welsh side had trailed 2-0 deep into the latter period. In the celebrations, there was some minor mishaps. The midfielder recalled, "There was a fan trying to get our attention and we were wondering: 'What's he on about here?' Then we noticed the glasses. It was a light-hearted moment putting them on. We are on the pitch as players but we're individuals, too, so to have a bit of craic with the fans is always good."

Manchester City Challenge

The result earned a next round match at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, a club Galbraith came close against at the same stage of the FA Cup with the London side in February. The athletic midfielder had arguably the best view when the underdogs took the lead in stunning style, with the attacker's first-time shot from about 45 yards going in via the woodwork and the opposition keeper. It seems unfair that it was deemed an own goal.

"You would have hoped they would've awarded it to him for having a go from that distance," commented Galbraith, who began the game centrally before switching to right defensive wing after they changed tactics. That meant getting to grips with City's winger, with whom he traded tops, and the player was among the City players who complimented the way his former team played positively.

City's Quality

"Athletically they are outstanding but even the simple things and basic skills, they can just do it over and over again," Galbraith says. "It seems as if they never miss a pass and they are adept at control and slow down a game. You can think you're doing well and then suddenly they will just fizz a pass past your midfield without you even noticing. You have to be focused at all times of the game. It requires a resilient mindset and concentration just to keep pace."

Swansea Move

Swansea pushed to sign Galbraith in January and beat off competition to sign him in the summer in a seven-figure transfer. He made a name as a fans' favourite across multiple campaigns at Orient and has swiftly done the same in south Wales. At Orient he linked up again with the coach, who previously gave Galbraith his first extended run in first-team action on loan at a League One side from Manchester United. Then came a loan at lower division the Manchester club, before he moved on from his boyhood club.

Development Path

"I was probably a bit naive going into senior level. I think a lot of players would say under-23s football is very different. Sometimes it feels like play is circulated without serious challenge. You see few hard challenges. Once you start playing professional matches you have to adapt rapidly."

Country Call-ups

His progress reflects that maturation for both domestically and internationally, excelling for Northern Ireland, who could still reach the World Cup next summer via the playoffs and for whom he has featured in the last several matches, including two matches games against a football powerhouse. Ian Baraclough, Galbraith's previous international manager, paid him the supreme accolade, saying he was Northern Ireland's "little Iniesta or Xavi" given how he controls possession and his eye for a decisive through ball.

Early Days

This marks quite the ride for the player from the neighborhood in Glengormley, just outside the capital, who used to see his parent, his father, also a central player, play for Ballyclare Comrades.

Red Devils Debut

Galbraith's single match for United came in Kazakhstan in 2019, a Europa League trip to the host city, where they played on an artificial pitch and the stadium roof was sealed owing to conditions of bitter cold. "It was a long trip and it was freezing," he says, grinning. "The preceding week, the academy prospects trained together, so that aided our adjustment. Just to join the main group and earn some playing time at the end was unbelievable."

Departing Old Trafford

What was the challenge was it to depart Manchester United, the club he signed from his boyhood team aged a teenager? "This turned out fairly simple, because I got to the stage where I understood I couldn't establish myself at the senior squad. I'm extremely thankful for the years at the club but it got to the point where I believed I needed to go my own route, join a smaller club and play professional soccer. Now I'm steadily climbing the ladder."

Life in Swansea

It is mid-afternoon at Swansea's Fairwood training base but Galbraith has a commitment at late afternoon: a driving theory test, another move in the direction of getting on the road. Prior to relocating to the local area, the mid-twenties player was a regular in Swansea's nicknamed fun bus, a minibus driven by club employees, the transport team, which transports players to and from training and matches.

"My companions include the Portuguese player, the Brazilian, Malick Yalcouyé – a former passenger used to be in it but has begun using his own car. It's enjoyable to interact with the guys but I'm hoping to be the following person to stop using the bus and on the road. Franco likes to pull a few pranks; he's constantly causing mischief."

Supporter Connections

While playing for his former club, Galbraith would travel alongside fans on the Tube after starting his journey at the area he lived in. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
