Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He fought justice and justice prevailed.

Sixty days subsequent to getting a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “destroy” Brazil’s democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now seems destined for incarceration.

Expected Incarceration

The adjudicated plotter – who's been living under house arrest in his mansion while a series of judicial steps and challenges play out – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, during growing speculation that he will be transferred to a notorious top-security penitentiary.

Historical Statements on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s long public life, the right-wing ex- military man exhibited scant mercy for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we offer these lowlifes a easy time?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be messed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to end up there, the only thing required is not rape, kidnap or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Speculation

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week inspected the facility in an apparent attempt to prevent the high court from sending him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, claimed he predicted the elderly figure to be jailed in the coming fortnight and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious digestive ailments – the outcome of a near-fatal assault during the last presidential campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He won’t be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells accommodating forty detainees: “That’s almost one meter squared per detainee.

“We talked to the convicts and they protest, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” continued the senator.

Backers Speak Out

He is not the lone figure expressing views ahead of the former president’s predicted imprisonment.

Penning in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and asserted Brazil was about to see “the largest unfairness in its record”.

“It represents an wrong that eats away the souls of countless people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Mixed General Response

It is possibly accurate due to the significant following Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. However his predicted incarceration has also warmed the feelings of numerous individuals who feel he ought to be incarcerated for plotting to stop his successor from taking power – and also conspiring to have him murdered.

Congressman Otoni, a politician for the current administration's Workers’ party, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. No one wants Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to receive respectful treatment – but respectful care while incarcerated. He cannot carry on being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the severe handling of prisoners, had unexpectedly become aware to their privileges. “Just now has the far-right – which has repeatedly argued that civil liberties were not for lawbreakers – chosen to visit a penitentiary to learn what conditions are truly like,” he said.

“He is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, insulting handling”.

Possible Incarceration Conditions

In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now houses about 14,000 prisoners, his expected destination seems to be a close jail for officers and other “particular” prisoners called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although still a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro had while living in the stunning official residence, about 20 kilometers away.

As per information, the room Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – about the dimensions of two parking spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre bathroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and even a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report stated.

Partisan Reactions

Senator Lucas criticized the rumoured proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will decide his fate in the {
