Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Uninterrupted Oil Deliveries to India in Rebuff of US Demands

Amid a unambiguous message to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “uninterrupted” deliveries of crude oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and asserted their partnership were “immune to foreign coercion.”

A Message For the United States

The statement, made on Friday, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at Washington, that have sought to urge New Delhi into curtailing its historical relations with Moscow. This comes follows previous American measures, such as the introduction of tariffs against Indian goods due to its purchase of discounted Russian crude.

“Our nation is a dependable source of energy resources and anything needed for the growth of India’s energy sector,” the Russian president said. “We are ready to persist in ensuring the uninterrupted supply of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, without naming energy explicitly, echoed the sentiment by saying that “energy security has been a key and crucial pillar of the Indo-Russian cooperation.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the meeting, in a television interview, Putin had criticized US interference over India's energy purchases. The president questioned, “When Washington is entitled to buy our uranium, how can you deny India enjoy the same privilege?”

The visit was his initial trip to India since the onset of the war in Ukraine, and both sides made a deliberate show to demonstrate that the friendship between the heads of state was undisturbed.

A Warm Reception

Taking an notable move, Prime Minister Modi met Putin upon his arrival. They exchanged a hearty embrace as close allies before enjoying a private dinner on Thursday evening.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's relationship with Russia as “a beacon” and added it was “founded on reciprocal esteem and strong faith.”

Expanding Bilateral Ties

The bilateral summit resulted in several key agreements regarding defence and trade relations. One significant result was the finalization of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which sets a goal to boost bilateral trade to $100bn each year by the 2030 deadline.

Additionally agreed to recalibrate their military partnership. Although Russia continues to be India's primary exporter of weapons, this role has declined over the past decade as India aims to broaden its procurement.

The joint statement highlighted plans for the co-development of sophisticated military systems, although explicit details of systems like the Sukhoi Su-57 were omitted.

Ultimately, both nations reiterated that amid the “ongoing challenging, tense, and uncertain geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership remain resilient to outside forces.”
