The Mayor-Elect states his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, did not confirm he would live there right away following his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will always live within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
A Contentious Issue
During his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he hails from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his modest Astoria digs.
With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
