The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial European match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the win at Manchester.
