Three Lions Coach Reveals The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, Barry featured in League Two. Currently, he is focused to assist the England manager secure World Cup glory next summer. His path from player to coach began through volunteering with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his destiny.

Rapid Rise

His advancement has been remarkable. Commencing with his first major job, he built a standing for innovative drills and great man-management. His stints with teams led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a structured plan enabling us to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock all the time, they both challenge limits. Their strategies involve mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry says. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer the whole ground and we dedicate many of our days on. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes but to beat them and set new standards. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear in that period. It's about moving it from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology for effective use in that window, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships among them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. They've already ensured qualification with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy ought to embody all the positives about the Premier League,” he comments. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the work ethic. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data currently. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”

Passion for Progress

His desire for improvement knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class featured big names including former players. So, to build his skill set, he sought out the most challenging environments available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison locally, and he trained detainees for a training session.

Barry graduated as the best in his year, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard was among those won over and he recruited the coach to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the team dismissed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he got Barry out from Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
