UK Prepared to Use Immobilized Russian Holdings to Fund Ukraine's Military Campaign
The United Kingdom is set to progress with employing the full worth of seized Russia's holdings to aid the Ukrainian war effort, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has stated.
In a joint statement, the officials of the UK, the French Republic, and Germany stated that this joint measure would escalate tension on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and urge the Russian Federation to come to the table.
They added that the move would be executed in strong partnership with the America.
UK penalties have frozen over £25bn of Russian funds since the Russian government began its widespread offensive against Ukraine in 2022. But, previously, funds sent to Ukraine using Russia's assets had only been sourced from earnings and returns earned on them.
Sir Keir told President Volodymyr Zelensky that the United Kingdom, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany were aligned in their aim to push forward toward employing the full value of the frozen Russia's state holdings to end the war.
He stated that more restrictions in the coming days and weeks would apply more pressure on Moscow.
This announcement follows European representatives convened in the Danish capital last week to consider employing immobilized Russian assets for a €140 billion credit to the Ukrainian nation.
Last month, US President Donald Trump urged G7 allies to confiscate or utilize seized Russia's funds, as reported by media sources.
The value of immobilized Russia's assets in the Europe is estimated to be approximately €211bn.
President Zelensky urges the United Kingdom's Sir Keir Starmer to join the Purl program
The Russian government launched extensive missile and drone strikes all over Ukraine on Friday, leading to electricity outages in significant regions of Kyiv, the city, and eight other regions.
Two people were lost their lives and at least 20 people were hurt in the strike, authorities in Ukraine stated.
In a post on X after the incident, Zelensky commented that the premeditated assault targeted public and utility structures.
"The necessity is not mere statements but decisive action - from the US, the European Union, and the Group of Seven - in delivering defense mechanisms and implementing sanctions," he wrote.
"All penalty impositions undermines Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky declared, in a separate post.
Also on Friday, Zelensky told reporters he would encourage Sir Keir to participate in the weapons procurement program, under which alliance members acquire arms from the United States to provide to Ukraine.
While applauding the UK's strong support for the Ukrainian government, he said it should indicate firmly that it would engage in the system, as well as apply further restrictions on Moscow.
